pH is the most critical water chemistry parameter for equipment protection. Low pH (below 7.2) is acidic and aggressively corrosive to metal components. It can eat through copper heat exchangers in heaters, corrode stainless steel handrails and ladders, and damage the internal components of pumps and chlorinators.

High pH (above 7.8) promotes scale formation. Calcium carbonate deposits accumulate on heating elements, acting as an insulator that reduces heat transfer efficiency. This forces heaters to work harder and consume more energy, while also shortening their operational life.

The Role of Calcium Hardness

Calcium hardness is often overlooked, but it plays a crucial role in equipment protection. Low calcium hardness (below 150 ppm) makes water aggressive and corrosive, particularly toward plaster and concrete surfaces. High calcium hardness (above 400 ppm) accelerates scale formation, especially in heaters and on salt chlorine generator plates.

Maintaining calcium hardness in the ideal range of 200-400 ppm is essential for protecting both pool surfaces and equipment. Regular testing and adjustment can prevent costly damage and extend equipment life significantly.
