Pool equipment represents the largest investment in any pool system, and proper maintenance is the key to maximizing its lifespan. For service professionals, knowing how to inspect, maintain, and troubleshoot equipment is as important as understanding water chemistry.

This comprehensive maintenance checklist covers the essential equipment every pool service technician encounters and provides practical guidance for keeping it in top condition.

Pump Maintenance

The pump is the heart of the pool circulation system, and it requires regular attention. Inspect the pump strainer basket at every visit and clean it when necessary — a clogged basket restricts flow and forces the pump to work harder. Check the pump lid O-ring for cracks or wear and lubricate it with silicone-based lubricant to maintain a proper seal.

Listen for unusual noises during operation. A rattling sound may indicate debris in the impeller, while a whining noise could signal failing bearings. Monitor the pump's pressure and flow rates — significant changes from baseline readings indicate developing problems that should be addressed promptly.

Filter Care

Different filter types require different maintenance approaches. For cartridge filters, remove and clean the elements when pressure rises 8-10 PSI above clean operating pressure. Replace cartridges annually or when they show signs of degradation. For DE filters, backwash when pressure rises, and add fresh DE after each backwash.

Sand filters should be backwashed when pressure rises 8-10 PSI above normal. Inspect the sand bed annually and replace sand every 3-5 years or when it becomes channeled or fouled. The lateral assembly at the bottom of the filter should be inspected during sand changes for cracks or damage.

Heater Maintenance

Pool heaters require careful attention to both water chemistry and mechanical components. Proper water balance — particularly LSI — is critical for heater longevity. Scale buildup on heat exchanger surfaces is the leading cause of heater failure, and it's entirely preventable with proper water chemistry management.

Inspect the heater's burner assembly annually for soot buildup, which indicates incomplete combustion. Check the sacrificial anode rod and replace it when it's more than 50% consumed. Ensure proper ventilation around gas heaters and clean the combustion air intake of debris.

Chlorinator and Sanitizer Systems

Salt chlorine generators need regular inspection of the cell for calcium buildup. Clean the cell with a diluted acid solution when scale is visible — never use a wire brush or abrasive cleaner that could damage the precious metal coating on the plates. Most cells last 3-7 years depending on usage and water chemistry.

For erosion chlorinators, check the chlorine level regularly and adjust the feed rate as needed. Inspect the chamber for calcium buildup and clean it periodically. Ensure the suction line and injection point are clear of debris.

Creating a Maintenance Schedule
